I just started using experimenting with Google Groups with my HL Physics class. I wanted to integrate technology into my classroom, the only problem being that my school has none really. We only has a small handful of computer labs (which are always in use for testing or by damn English teachers), and I have possession of the Science department's 6 laptops (for 31 students). On top of that my district refuses to support any database functionality at the school/web level (look at my faux blog looking school homepage), so we I can't do anything at that level and as far as I know have no classroom portal software like blackboard or anything like that.
So I decided to use Google Groups due to its built in threaded discussions, user created "pages", fairly open standards and very little in the way of advertisement. And what's even better is the fact that it's free! I began the group on Thursday, announced it to my kids on Friday and already about 15 or so of them have signed up and a few have started posting. So far, so good. I just started a thread to try and figure out brainstorm some new ideas into integrating technology in our classroom. I also introduced them to Google Docs and meebo! so that will assist with word processing and group collaboration, even when behind the firewall at school.
I'll keep posting back every few days to keep everyone up to date.
